What Gutters Do on a Houston House: Short Answers
What is the purpose of gutters on a house? In Houston the short answer is: to catch the rain coming off the roof and put it somewhere other than the foundation, the siding and the front steps. Everything else in this FAQ follows from that. Below are short, plain answers to the gutter questions Houston homeowners ask most — what gutters do, what they cost, how they should be sized for our rain, guards, cleaning, insurance and hiring. Prices are typical Houston-area ranges for 2026, not a quote — the pricing page has the full tables.
What is the purpose of gutters on a house?
What do gutters do for a house?
They collect the water that runs off the roof edge and carry it to a few downspouts, which send it away from the house. Without them, every foot of roof edge drops water straight down along the wall — onto the slab, into the flower beds, against the brick and onto anyone standing at the door.
Why are gutters important on a house in Houston?
Because of the soil and the rain together. Most of Harris County is expansive clay under a slab, and Houston gets around 50 inches of rain a year, often two inches an hour at a time. Water dumped unevenly at the foundation makes one side of the clay swell while the other shrinks, and that is how slabs move. Houston gutters and drainage are one problem, not two.
Are gutters important on every house?
Are gutters important on a small single-story house with wide eaves and ground that falls away on every side? Less so. On most Houston homes — flat lots, short eaves, clay soil, a slab — yes. A missing gutter over a doorway or a side yard is usually the first thing to fix.
Cost
How much does gutter repair cost in Houston?
Most single repairs are $150–$300: a resealed corner, a re-hung run, a replaced downspout. A visit with two or three items is $300–$600. Fascia is extra, at $8–$20 per foot.
What does seamless gutter installation cost in Houston?
About $9–$15 per linear foot installed for aluminum. A 160-foot single-story home is $1,600–$2,400; a 220-foot two-story is $2,600–$3,800. Six-inch adds roughly 20%.
How much is gutter cleaning?
$120–$200 single-story, $180–$300 two-story, flat by home size. A good gutter cleaning visit includes a ladder inspection.
What do gutter guards cost?
Aluminum screen $5–$9 a foot, stainless micro-mesh $10–$18, reverse-curve $18–$30. On a 160-foot home that's $900–$2,900 depending on type.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace?
Repair if the gutters are aluminum, under 20 years old, and the problems are in a few spots. Replace if they're sectional, rusting steel, or more than a third needs work. Repair vs. replacement goes deeper.
Should I get more than one gutter estimate in Houston?
Yes, and compare line items — gauge, hangers, downspout size, fascia, haul-away — not just the total. Ask for it in writing and ask how long the price holds.
Sizing and overflow
Why do my gutters overflow when they're clean?
Undersized downspouts, bad pitch, or a 5-inch gutter on a big roof. Houston rain at two inches an hour beats the national sizing rules. Full diagnosis in why gutters overflow in Houston rain.
Do I need 6-inch gutters?
On two-story homes, steep roofs and runs collecting a large roof area, usually yes. Most single-story homes do fine with 5-inch and 3x4 downspouts.
What's the difference between 2x3 and 3x4 downspouts?
A 3x4 carries nearly twice the water for about $40 more per downspout. Many Houston installers now use them as standard.
How many downspouts should a run have?
One per 30–35 feet in Houston, and one at each end of a run over 40 feet.
How far should downspouts discharge from the house?
At least four feet, six on a flat lot, onto ground that slopes away. On expansive clay this is the cheapest foundation protection there is — see downspouts and your slab.
Repairs
Can a leaking corner be fixed without replacing the gutter?
Almost always. Clean to bare metal and reseal with polyurethane gutter sealant. $150–$250, and it holds for years.
Why is my gutter sagging?
Spike hangers backed out of the fascia, or the fascia has rotted. Re-hanging on hidden screw hangers is $150–$300 per run; rotted fascia has to be replaced first.
My gutter came off in a storm — is that covered by insurance?
Sudden wind damage often is, subject to your wind-and-hail deductible; age and wear usually aren't. Policies differ, so check with your insurer or agent, and photograph the damage before anyone touches it.
Can a gutter be fixed on rotted fascia?
Not until the fascia is replaced. It's $8–$20 per foot for the board, and the fascia and soffit repair page explains the job.
Does a downspout repair in Houston need a permit?
Simple like-for-like gutter and downspout repairs usually don't, but rules differ between the City of Houston, the suburbs and HOAs. Check with your city's permitting office and your HOA before bigger work such as buried drain lines.
Guards and cleaning
Are gutter guards worth it in Houston?
Under live oaks and pines, usually — they replace two or three cleanings a year with a rinse. Under a couple of ornamentals, no. The gutter guards page goes tree by tree.
Which guard works under pine trees?
Stainless micro-mesh. Screens and reverse-curve hoods tend to let needles through or hold them on top.
Do guards stop all cleaning?
No. Micro-mesh under oaks needs a hose-off once a year to clear catkins; anyone promising "never clean again" is selling, not describing.
How often should gutters be cleaned here?
Twice a year — late May after the oaks, and early December after the tallows. Three times under pines. See the fall leaf calendar.
Can I clean gutters myself?
Single-story with a good ladder and a helper, yes. Two-story, we'd hire it out. Never lean the ladder on the gutter itself.
Hiring
Does Texas license gutter contractors?
Texas doesn't license gutter work the way it licenses electricians or plumbers, as far as we know — but check with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and your city before relying on that. Either way, ask for proof of general liability insurance and whether the crew is covered by workers' compensation; a reputable contractor sends it before the work starts.
What should be on a written gutter quote?
Gutter size and gauge (.032 is better than .027), hanger type and spacing, downspout size and count, corner method, fascia repair per foot, extensions, haul-away, and the terms of any workmanship warranty.
I searched “gutter repair near me Houston” — how do I pick?
Search results are mostly ads. Better: ask for the line items above, ask for proof of insurance, and notice whether the estimate is done from a ladder or the driveway. A gutter contractor in Houston who handles all three well is usually a safe choice.
How long does installation take?
One day for most homes. Repairs are usually a morning. Most contractors move storm-damage repairs up the schedule.
Common questions
What does a gutter do, exactly?
A gutter is a channel along the roof edge that catches the water running off the shingles. It slopes slightly toward a downspout, which carries the water down the wall and, with an extension, away from the foundation. That's the whole job, and on a Houston slab it's an important one.
Where are the gutters on a house?
They're fastened to the fascia — the board along the lower edge of the roof, under the shingles — on the eaves where water runs off. Gable ends, the sloped edges of the roof, usually don't need them because water doesn't run off there.
What are rain gutters on houses called?
Most people just say gutters or rain gutters. You'll also hear eavestroughs or eaves troughs, mostly from people who grew up in Canada or the northern states, and roof gutters. On a quote the parts are listed as gutter runs, downspouts, elbows, end caps, outlets and hangers.
What is another word for roof gutters?
Eavestrough is the most common alternative, and older houses sometimes have box gutters or built-in gutters, which are set into the roof edge rather than hung on the fascia. If a contractor uses a term you don't know on a quote, ask — the price should match parts you can point to on the house.
What we'd add
Most gutter problems in Houston come down to two things: the system was sized for average rain rather than ours, and the water lands at the slab. Fix those two and the rest is maintenance. Our gutter repair and installation pages explain each in more detail, and if your question isn't here, a free estimate from a local contractor usually answers it in one visit.
