Aluminum screen $5–$9 per foot; stainless micro-mesh $10–$18 per foot; reverse-curve $18–$30 per foot. On a 160-foot home that's roughly $900–$2,900 depending on the type. What moves the price

• Stories. Two-story work costs 15–25% more for the setup.
• Roof complexity. Every inside corner is a miter; hip roofs with lots of corners cost more per foot than a simple gable.
• Fascia condition. The biggest surprise on old homes. Ask for it to be checked before the quote so it isn't a surprise on the invoice.
• Gutter size. Six-inch is about 20% more than five-inch and worth it on big roofs.
• Access. Pool cages, dense landscaping and steep lots add labor time.
• Color. Standard white, brown and the common trim colors are stock; a specialty color may add a week and a small upcharge for the coil.

A worked example

Here's an illustration, not a quote: a two-story home in Cypress with 210 feet of gutter, five downspouts, one soft corner of fascia and a hip roof with eight corners. 6-inch .032 aluminum with 3x4 downspouts at $14 a foot is $2,940; ten feet of fascia at $12 is $120; extensions on five downspouts at $40 are $200. Total about $3,260, one day, old gutters hauled off. The same house quoted at $2,100 is almost certainly 5-inch .027 metal with 2x3 downspouts and spike hangers.

Estimate your own footage first

You can get close to the right number before anyone visits. Walk the house and measure each roof edge that has, or needs, a gutter. A tape along the ground under the eave is close enough. Add the runs together. Then count the downspouts, and note how long each one is: about 10 feet for a single story, 20 for a second.

Multiply the footage by the per-foot ranges above and you'll know if a bid is in the normal band or far outside it. A typical single-story home lands between 150 and 200 feet.

Ways to spend less without buying a worse job

• Do repair and replacement in one visit. Fascia, guards and new gutters cost less together than as three trips.
• Replace only the failing sides. If the front was replaced after a storm and is fine, a quote for the other three sides is reasonable, as long as the profile and color match.
• Skip guards under small trees. Under a couple of young ornamentals, a cleaning every year or two costs less.
• Book in the dry months. October and November are calmer than the weeks after a named storm, and you'll have time to compare bids.
• Ask about extensions, not drain lines, first. A $40 extension often does the job a $400 buried line was quoted for.

Costs people forget to ask about

Some lines only show up if you ask. Check whether the estimate covers removing old guards, resetting satellite dishes or lights mounted on the fascia, dumpster or haul-away fees, and repainting new wood trim. Ask whether there is a trip charge for a small repair. None of these is unusual, but each one should be on paper before work starts.

Ask for the aluminum gauge (.032 is better than .027), the hanger type and spacing (hidden hangers every 24 inches), the downspout size, and whether fascia repair and haul-away are included.
