The five repairs we do most in Houston

Leaking corners and end caps. Mitered corners are the weak point of any gutter. The sealant fails after 8–12 years in Houston heat, and the corner starts dripping onto the porch or the AC pad. We clean the joint back to bare aluminum, reseal with a polyurethane gutter sealant that stays flexible, and if the miter itself is corroded we replace the corner piece. Sagging runs. The old spike-and-ferrule hangers back out of the fascia over time, especially on the sunny south and west sides where the wood dries and splits. The gutter drops in the middle, holds water, and gets heavier. We re-hang with hidden screw hangers every 24 inches — or 18 inches on runs that carry a lot of roof — and reset the pitch so water actually reaches the downspout.

Crushed or disconnected downspouts. Lawn mowers, ladders and cars in the driveway. A crushed downspout backs up the whole run. Replacement is quick; we usually upsize to 3x4 while we're at it, which doubles the capacity for about $40 more per downspout. Pulled-off sections after storms. Wind gets under a gutter that's already loose and peels it back. If the section is straight we re-hang it; if it's kinked we replace that run and match the profile and color to the rest. After a named storm we photograph everything first so your adjuster has what they need.

Rotted fascia. This is the one people don't see. A gutter that has been overflowing for a few years soaks the fascia board behind it. We can't hang a gutter on soft wood. Repair or replace?

We use a simple rule. If the gutter is aluminum, under 20 years old, and the problem is in one or two places — repair. If it's sectional (seams every 10 feet), steel and rusting, or more than a third of the runs need work, you'll spend almost as much patching it as you would on a new seamless system that comes with a warranty. What a repair visit looks like

1. We walk every run from a ladder, not from the ground, and check the fascia behind it with a screwdriver.
2. We look at where every downspout drains. If it dumps at the slab, we'll recommend extensions — cheap, and the best thing you can do for a Houston foundation.
3. You get a written price. Repairs under $400 are usually done on the spot if you say yes.

What repair doesn't fix

A 5-inch gutter with one 2x3 downspout on a 60-foot run will overflow in a Houston storm no matter how well it's sealed. That's a sizing problem, and the honest fix is a second downspout, a 3x4 upgrade, or on a big roof a 6-inch run.
