Fascia and soffit repair in Houston
A gutter is only as good as the board it hangs on. Years of overflow soak the fascia, the hangers let go, and the gutter ends up on the lawn. We replace the rot and rebuild the roof edge so the new gutter has something solid to hold.
What the fascia does
The fascia is the flat board that runs along the roof edge, nailed to the ends of the rafters. The gutter hangs on it. The soffit is the panel underneath, closing off the eave and venting the attic. On most Houston homes from the 1970s through the 90s both are painted pine or fir, and they've spent thirty summers at 95 degrees and 80% humidity with a gutter dribbling on them.
Fascia and soffit repair Houston-area homes need is almost always a gutter problem first. Overflow at a corner runs down the fascia; a gutter pitched backward holds water against it; a downspout elbow that's come apart sprays the soffit from below. The wood gets soft, the hangers lose their bite, and the gutter sags — which makes the overflow worse. It's a loop, and it ends with a gutter on the ground after the next tropical storm.
How to tell
- Paint bubbling or peeling in a band along the roof edge, worst at corners and below downspouts
- A gutter that has dropped away from the fascia, showing a dark gap at the top
- Soffit panels that are stained, sagging, or have a hole a squirrel found first
- Push a screwdriver into the board near a corner: if it sinks in, the wood is gone
What we do
We take down the gutter on the affected run, cut out the rotten fascia back to sound wood, and check the rafter tails behind it. Most of the time the rafters are fine and it's just the board. We install new primed fascia — either kiln-dried lumber or cellular PVC trim that can't rot — flash the top edge, replace any soffit panels that are gone, and re-hang the gutter on hidden hangers screwed into the new board. If the rafter tails are rotten too, we sister new lumber alongside them; that's rarer and we'll show you before we do it.
Where the roof has a missing or bent drip edge, we'll flag it. A drip edge is what stops water running behind the gutter in the first place, and adding one at the eave is a small job that saves the new fascia.

A typical job is one or two runs — 20 to 40 feet of fascia — so $300–$800 including re-hanging the gutter. Whole-house fascia replacement on a 1970s ranch in Westbury or Sharpstown is $1,500–$3,500 and is usually done alongside a seamless gutter replacement, where the labor overlaps and the price per foot drops.
When it's part of a gutter job
Every gutter repair and replacement estimate we write includes a fascia check with a screwdriver from the ladder. If we find rot, it goes on the estimate as its own line, per foot, before the job starts. A crew that quotes new gutters from the driveway and finds the rot on install day will either hang the gutter on it anyway or hand you a surprise bill; we'd rather you see the number first.

Can new gutters be installed on rotted fascia?
No — the hangers have nothing to hold and the gutter will pull away within a year, usually in the first big storm. Any contractor who says otherwise is planning on not being around when it happens. The rot has to come out first, and it's usually only a few boards.
Should I use wood or PVC for fascia in Houston?
PVC trim costs a few dollars more per foot and can't rot, which matters at corners and under downspouts where the water keeps coming. Primed pine is fine on runs that stay dry once the gutter is fixed. We'll usually suggest PVC at the trouble spots and lumber elsewhere.
Does soffit damage mean I have a roof leak?
Sometimes, but more often it's a gutter overflowing at that spot or a downspout elbow spraying from below. We check where the water is coming from before replacing anything, because new soffit under a bad gutter will be stained again by spring.
